obstacle. I was informed 48hrs before the first tour that the mall will be doing construction and shutting down the Trolley from the 21st to the 28th - well we should be up and running for the 30th - but there would be no guarantee. So all Haunted Hertiage Tours on Streetcar#23 have been cancelled. But lets make some haunted lemonade, I talked with maintenance and operations and they have agreed to take Streetcar#23 out for a special Haunted Tour after it shuts down on Thanksgiving....Stay Tuned...Obstacles are opportunities....More to come
for their end of Season Haunted Heritage Tour Streetcar #23 this October 3rd,4th,5th and this time there are more stories, more stops and more haunted adventures.

The Haunted Heritage tour is back for the last run of the season bringing you an entertaining look at the historical and paranormal side of Nelson from the safety and comfort of local Streetcar #23. This time there are extra stories and new found facts about the mysteries of the Kootenays.

“This summer when we hosted the tours, people would approach us with their own experiences and we would get at least one new lead and at least one good story worthy of investigating.” Explains Trolley Driver and Paranormal League founder Chris Holland, “Each time we host one of these tours or when someone hears what we are doing they will usually have a story to tell about the unexplained in our area. It is when you hear the same stories over and over again that you realize something is worth investigating. For this last tour I have added some new stories and areas worthy of further exploration.”

Although this is the last run of the season and the Trolley is being put away for the winter, Chris Holland has some plans from some more paranormal fun as All Hallows Eve approaches, including walking tours and a haunted pub crawl.

“I’m currently putting together a simple walking tour of downtown Nelson featuring the mysterious and unexplained hot spots of the area” Says Chris Holland. “These tours will bring you up close and personal with highly active paranormal locations and are not for the faint of heart.”

October starts with the last run of the Haunted Heritage Tour Streetcar #23 on Friday, Saturday and Sunday the 3rd, 4th and 5th starting at 5:30pm loading at Lakeside Park Trolley Stop. For more information or to get advance tickets drop by the Nelson and District Chamber of Commerce at 225 Hall St. or call 250.352.3433. The NPL are not scientists, but simply a group of researchers interested in studying local sites that have unusual histories or stories surrounding them.

Nelson, BC has a rich history and houses many buildings that were built in the late 1800s to early 1900s. A surprising number of these buildings have “haunted” histories and are reported to be inhabited by spirits, both benevolent and malevolent.
The NPL’s mission is to investigate these histories and attempt to explain the strange phenomena that seems to surround them.

The NPL’s story began in the late spring of 2004, husband and wife team Chris Holland and Serene Stewart of Juggernaut Marketing and Communications wanted to start a ghost tour of Nelson for the Hallowe’en season, as many other cities have (interesting side note: Holland and Stewart were married on Hallowe’en night, 2003). It would be a haunted tram ride, but unlike other cities, they insisted it not rely on cheesy scare tactics or plastic skeletons, but on local ghost stories, true to Nelson. They invited friend and graphic designer Kevin Macintyre to join in the endeavour, and so began months of intensive research and interviews with locals.

As the trio delved into the history of the Queen City, it became apparent that Nelson, a city rich with catalogued history, also had a great number of tales that went largely unknown by the public. Nelson’s history includes an opium den, whorehouses, and secret tunnels that ran beneath the streets - as well as a number of stories of spirits, apparitions, and other unexplainable phenomenon.

The team was fascinated, and re-doubled their research efforts. The more stories they uncovered, the more questions arose. And with the strong desire to answer those questions, the Nelson Paranormal League was born.

Fuelled by spooky stories of local history that chilled and delighted the public, the 2004 Haunted Heritage Tour was a huge success, with all seats selling out on all four shows in under 24 hours and with over 120 people on a waiting list.

And more stories rolled in. It seemed that almost every person that walked off the Haunted Heritage tram had a spooky tale of their own, and many of these stories would ultimately lead the League to uncover a little more of Nelson’s haunted history.

The success of the Haunted Heritage Tour lead the League to their next project: an intensive paranormal study of one of Nelson’s most reputedly haunted sites, the Hume Hotel. In October of 2005, the NPL entered the Hume along with noted Tarot Card reader, psychic, and listener Thea Trussler, as well as a three-man camera crew led by Blue Dog Media’s Jacy Schindel. The NPL first interviewed a few key members of the Hume’s regular night staff as well as the general manager Ryan Martin, and then began their dusk til dawn vigil, eight hours of filmed investigation through the heart and bowels of Nelson’s most infamous paranormal hotspot.

On October 2006, and after a year of study and scrutiny, the NPL revealed their findings to the public in “Haunt at the Hume”, a 45 minute documentary chronicling the events of that evening and the mysterious evidence gathered.

For more info contact the NPL at 250-505-5016 or nelsonparanormal@shaw.ca Nelson Paranormal Leaguehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18312320962061637934noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3682459011389014784.post-9967070381595396372006-10-08T20:56:00.000-07:002008-12-08T17:50:22.271-08:00Nelson Paranormal League Captures Ghostly Evidence on Film

Nelson BC- The Nelson Paranormal League is excited to feature their film debut of Haunt at the Hume, a filmed exploration of past and present paranormal events in Nelson’s most infamous hotel. This film will be featured in the Hume Room of the Hume Hotel on October 28th at 3pm, 5pm, 7pm and 9pm.

After a tumultuous 11 months of researching, investigating and editing, the Nelson Paranormal League (NPL) is ready to unveil their results of an all night vigil performed by the local ghost hunting crew. Although hampered by mysterious electronic hardware failure, the volunteer group of paranormal enthusiasts are quite pleased with the results. The 44 minute documentary raises some compelling evidence of paranormal activity at the Hume Hotel in Nelson, BC, including chilling first hand accounts, and unexplainable EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena).

“While we were editing footage we discovered a mysterious voice that could not be accounted for and seems to be giving us a compelling message,” says Chris Holland, founder of the Nelson Paranormal League, “This evidence, along with many other discoveries has made our first filmed venture a success. Our objective was to capture evidence of paranormal activity, which we did, and we are excited to share our results.”

The Nelson Paranormal League has been investigating the unknown for over three years and each of their expeditions has progressively gathered more evidence of unexplainable.

Nelson Paranormal Leaguehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18312320962061637934noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3682459011389014784.post-44248038524272856822006-09-10T15:54:00.000-07:002007-01-12T21:21:37.036-08:00Memoirs Of Ghost HunterBy Serene Stewart

The Nelson Paranormal League is a group of enthusiasts interested in studying paranormal phenomena. The NPL are not scientists, but simply a group of researchers interested in studying local sites that have unusual histories or stories surrounding them.

Thanks, Kevin. But really, who is the Nelson Paranormal League?

Well, I guess the logical place to start is with myself. My name is Serene, and I guess I’m the believer of the group. Well, I was, no, I am, well, let’s get back to this…

I vividly remember, as a child, that feeling of fear so intense, you could taste it. The blood pumping in your head, the echoing thump of your heart, the very real sensation of what it is to be truly afraid of the ghostly encounter underway. But as an adult, not much more than spiritual beliefs and a desire to believe the afterlife exists. My beliefs have been neither denied nor confirmed by my involvement in the Nelson Paranormal League, or NPL (nipple), if you’re in the know. I have seen things that I believe to possibly be unexplainable, but on the whole, logic has prevailed on experiences thus far. I expect that is why we continue spending our spare nights hanging out in dinghy basements and haunted hotel rooms.

The next member of our team is Chris, fearless investigator, and also my husband. We are marketers by day. Marketing what? What have you got? My roots are firmly planted in good corporate communications stuff, BC Hydro, Environment Canada, solid, boring marketing with a budget. Chris on the other hand was molded in the dark confines of a night club in Vancouver. Nine years of promotions and pr through Granville Entertainment and onwards. Good solid marketing stuff also, but a little more flamboyant. We now own our own marketing company, Juggernaut, the force behind change. Not ghost hunting related at all, though. We were married in the Hume Hotel, in the suite upstairs, but sadly the most spiritual experience was the deep sleep that we got in the very comfortable bed.

Chris is a skeptical believer, if such a thing exists. He respects what could be, but challenges what is. Chris is the funny guy, who can get anyone to talk. He also talks a lot when he’s scared. But you’ll get to know Chris better after you see the action.

Kevin is our bonafide geek, our dude with the gadgets, and he’s not afraid to use them. When the time comes, when we are faced with the almighty paranormal proof beyond all belief or challenge, Kevin will be the one in the front, EMF Detector in hand, gathering the data. Despite the fact that Kevin is a pretty spiritual guy, he’s scientific through and through. He briefly lived in a retreat in the wilds of the West Coast islands, studying brain activity and frequency, and meditating amongst the cedars. An illustrator by trade, Kevin now works as at the local paper doing design and layout. He’s also Juggernaut’s #1 Graphic Designer.

Next is Thea, who refers to herself as a “listener” and engages her talent with the tarot cards as a medium of communication that bridges time and dimension. Her ability to tap into the energy of a place and listen to its story through the visual tools of the tarot raises some interesting stories that have been long since buried. Thea, accompanied by her faithful Great Dane Beauragard, are our spiritual detectors, alerting us to the unique energy experienced into our venture into the deep history of Nelson, BC, and its surrounding area. When they say Kootenay Ghost Towns, they’re not kidding.

So let’s start with our first foray into Nelson’s history, as it were. The Hume Hotel was opened March 17, 1898, by local pioneer family, J. Fred and Lydia Hume, and heralded a new era for Nelson, which was only incorporated one year earlier. It was a marvel to behold, with state of the art amenities including electric lights and steam radiators. National papers proclaimed “Between Winnipeg …and Vancouver…no such building exists.”

The Hume Hotel has always stood at the centre of Nelson, and has been home to countless families, guests, celebrations, and commiserations. But the “Grand Old Dame of Nelson” has a darker side, numerous reputed hauntings, and stories that have been covered like the old original fireplace in the Library Lounge. The Nelson Paranormal League decided to investigate, to find out about if the Hume is really as haunted as all the locals say.

Employees of the Hume tell mysterious tales of doors slamming, ghostly presences, TVs and lights turning on and off of their own accord, and unexplained feelings of being watched. NPL decided the Hume was the perfect location to test out our nerves of steel, and cool minds under crazy circumstance, not to mention our EMF detectors, digital thermometers and sound recorders. Our first job was to interview staff, and to find out what people who spent large amounts of time within the Hume, had to say about her.Nelson Paranormal Leaguehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18312320962061637934noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3682459011389014784.post-31688830267260608312004-11-03T20:40:00.000-08:002008-12-08T17:50:22.442-08:00Nelson Wants to Believe
Haunted Heritage Tour Huge Success

Nelson, BC – The Nelson Paranormal League was thrilled by the response to the Halloween weekend tour of the more colourful, and haunted history of Heritage Nelson. Four busses toured through Nelson, retracing the Resurrection Wagon Run, concluding with a late night drive through the City Cemetery.

“We sold out in record time”, says Serene Stewart, Nelson Paranormal League investigator, “People were phoning and begging for another bus to be added! I couldn’t believe the interest. This bodes very well for a repeat performance in the future”.

The local League comprised of Serene Stewart, Kevin Macintyre and Chris Holland, researched stories of Nelson’s history with the help of Shawn Lamb, Nelson Museum, archives, local library and Internet. “Once we got the word out there, the phone started ringing off the hook. So many people in this town have personal stories of hauntings, which they want to share. Many people said they had personal encounters with the paranormal, but no one to talk about it with. Some people were simply curious, others wanted proof, which we feel we might have gotten on our last stop,” states Stewart.

A digital picture, taken of the grave of Lydia and Fred Hume, shows signs of orbs; the term “orb” was coined back in 1996 with the development of digital technology. Photos and video taken during paranormal research showed a glowing ball or light that moved in an irregular pattern.

This picture was one of the last of the trip, taken as the group talked about Fred and Lydia Hume, a couple of the original pioneers of Nelson. Look at the right hand side above the gravestone, and a number of orbs can be seen. While these could be many things, including dust, pollen, water moisture and light reflection, the group is optimistic that the picture is evidence of the spectral presence felt by many on the tour. The photo has been submitted to the BC Ghosts and Hauntings Research Society (http://www.ghrs.org) for further analysis.

The Nelson Paranormal League is a volunteer organization, created to research and document paranormal activity in the Nelson area. Future plans include hands-on tours of haunted sites in Nelson and area. The tour will conclude with a late night drive through the City Cemetery, highlighting some of the many intriguing characters that are interred within.

“We have gathered some great stories about Nelson’s colourful past,” says NPL investigator Kevin Macintyre, “We have had great feedback from locals, Shawn at the Nelson Museum, old timers around town, and some people who wish to remain anonymous.”

The tour lasts just over an hour, and features stories, historical details and hopefully some ghostly interaction. There will be a special Kid-friendly bus on Saturday, October 30th, at 6:30.

Tickets are $10, or 4 for $30, and due to the limited seating, reservations are necessary.
